Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) Canada, a registered charity in Canada that runs youth development programs all year long all across Canada, conducted a Hindu Heritage Camp in London, ON on July 24th, Sunday from 9:00am to 3:00pm, outdoors at Springbank Park.

In an effort to start engagement of our children & youth, our next generation –  in learning about their heritage, serving our communities and to develop leadership in our community, HSS Canada presented this 5 hour  long Hindu Heritage & Leadership camp for children and teenagers.

The day started at 9am with Ice-breakers and games. There were about 35 campers in all and they were divided into 2 age groups of 9 to 12 and 13 + years. Following the ice-breakers/games, the two groups separately went through an hour interactive knowledge workshop on a Hinduism related application, that is relevant to their daily lives with Acharya Sachin of Chinmaya Mission. This was followed by an hour of leadership oriented games, which all of the campers enjoyed.

Campers were served with Lunch at noon. The afternoon sessions included Public and Impromptu speaking sessions  that involved thinking on the feet. This was followed by an hour of Martial Arts session and display of “Dand” martial arts with sticks.

At the end of the day, the campers tool part in the Guru Purnima and Gur Dakshina celebrations.

There were campers who came from as far as away as Mississauga. For 13 year old Anandhu Mahesh from Mississauga, he was a reluctant entry to the camp, not having attended a camp like this ever. At the end of the day, he signed for the 7 day overnight camp at Acton. Anandhu said ” I initially thought this would be a kind of prayer camp, but I am glad my dad pushed me to attend, because this was so much fun and activities oriented with learning of our heritage”.

Another first timer, Rishub Laul, 15, too liked the camp and decided to postpone his vacation plans to Montreal in early August, to sign up to pursue these activties and studies further at the 7 day camp in Acton, ON.

After the summer vacation, our weekly sessions comprising these activities will restart in the second week of September. If you have any questions or need additional information or would like to enroll your children into these activities, please call 519 319 0863 or Email vinod.varapravan@gmail.com
